I work full time. To me this means that I do not work necessarily by a clock or scheduled hours but I do the work that I need to do for that day or the next couple of days or the next week. I even do work today that I might not need until next year. There have been projects that require working 24 hours a day for a few days. You might even have to work for a few weeks without a break. Since I am self employed I work more than a forty hour work week most of the time. Most self employed people do. The trick is to know when you are working full time or all of the time. Working full time does not mean 24/7/365. There are people who think working full time means that they should always be available. They always have their phones on and they answer it when it rings, no matter where they are or what they are doing. These same people can’t go on vacations or to a movie or little else with out interruptions. They let someone else control their time and they end up worn out. They are not so busy they can’t stop; they just haven’t learned to schedule time for what is important to them. You do not have to schedule everything you do, but if you don’t actually schedule time for yourself it gets taken over by someone else. One thing we can all do is turn our phones off when we need some time and use the answering system. If you leave it on there are usually noises, vibrations or lights that let you know someone has called or sent a message and you are tempted to check. There goes your time. Try not to rearrange your schedule too often it will become a habit. There goes more time. You don’t have to explain to everyone why you can’t be somewhere nor do something at a certain time. Just tell them you have a previous appointment. They don’t have to know you want to watch your kid play a ball game. If you want to take a vacation, plan it. Let everyone know you will be gone and arrange for someone else to handle anything that may come up. No matter what we think, catastrophes are rare. Emails are another time eater. Convenient, you bet! But you log on just to check for anything that might be important and you end up reading a joke or some other message from someone and before you know it an hour has gone by. This can happen every time you check your email. There goes more time. There are always distractions, problems and always people that will need your attention such as your boss, a spouse, children, a best friend, a neighbor, a pet, phone calls to make. You probably can’t live your life according to a schedule but I do know that you have to schedule time for yourself or something will take it away. I save time for whom and what is important to me, without distractions. Working full time to me means working when you are “at” work, not at midnight, or while having dinner, or watching a ball game.
